How Decluttering and Yoga Taught Me the Power of Letting Go

Sabrina Caldera | AUG 18, 2025

I was never one for minimalism. In fact, I used to joke about being a maximalist because of all the stuff I had crammed into my home. My closets overflowed, my shelves were cluttered with knickknacks, and I always seemed to be cleaning just to make room to clean again.

But during one of the hardest seasons of my life, everything shifted.

While lying in bed one day, exhausted from grief and sleepless nights, I stumbled upon the Clutterbug Podcast. The host, Cas, said something that pierced through the fog: “If you’re at home and listening, please get up and do something.”

I didn’t want to move. I felt numb, heavy, and unmotivated. But something inside me thought, I can try to do something small. Then Cas suggested: “Grab a trash bag and just toss trash. Don’t overthink it, just move.”

So I did.

I walked through my house with that trash bag, tears still fresh on my face, and started tossing old mail, broken cords, empty receipts, and random bits of clutter. It wasn’t much, but when I carried that bag outside, I felt something unexpected—relief. A small weight had lifted. I could breathe just a little easier.

And in that moment, I remembered one of yoga’s guiding principles: Aparigraha, the Yama of non-grasping, or letting go. This was my first experience of practicing mindful decluttering through yoga philosophy.

What I Learned From Letting Go

I used to think all my stuff mattered—the “just in case” items, the decorations, the endless storage bins. But holding on came with a cost. I wasted time cleaning before I could cook. I spent energy moving things I didn’t even love. My house wasn’t supporting me—it was draining me.

That trash bag became my first step toward freedom. I realized the emotional benefits of decluttering and how deeply they connect to yoga philosophy like Aparigraha (non-grasping).

The Benefits of Decluttering (and How They Mirror Yoga)

Decluttering isn’t just about having a tidy home—it transforms your mind and body, too. Here are some of the benefits of decluttering I discovered, which align beautifully with yoga’s teachings:

1. Less Stress & Anxiety

A clutter-free space feels like a calm exhale. Just as savasana helps the body reset, clearing your home resets your nervous system.

2. More Energy

When you’re not weighed down by excess stuff, you have more energy for the things that matter—like movement, connection, and joy.

3. Clarity & Focus

Meditation clears the mind; decluttering and yoga clear the environment together. Both remove distractions so you can see what truly matters.

4. Emotional Release

Letting go of objects can mirror the process of letting go of past pain, guilt, or expectations. It’s a physical way of practicing Aparigraha.

5. Freedom & Space

An open room feels like an open mat—inviting you to move, breathe, and grow.

6. Better Daily Flow

Life gets easier. No more cleaning before you clean. Your home becomes a place that supports your rhythm.

7. Self-Compassion

Decluttering isn’t about punishing yourself for past purchases. It’s about forgiving yourself, learning, and moving forward.

My Journey Forward

That single trash bag led to many more. And with each bag, I felt lighter—not just in my home, but in my heart.

Today, mindful decluttering and yoga philosophy aren’t separate practices for me—they work hand in hand. Aparigraha, the art of letting go, has become both my mantra and my lifestyle.

If you’re seeking the benefits of decluttering for healing, I want you to know you don’t have to do it alone.

If you’re feeling weighed down by clutter—or by life itself—know that you don’t have to do everything at once. Start small. Grab a bag. Release what no longer serves you. With each step, you’ll find more space to breathe.

And if you’re ready to go deeper, I’d love to support you through yoga, meditation, and mindful decluttering—practices that have helped me heal and can help you, too.

I’d love to support you beyond this post.
