Now Is the Time for Yoga

Sabrina Caldera | FEB 15

Last week I shared a reflection on the third Yoga Sutra — and if I’m being honest, it might be my favorite to say in Sanskrit because it begins with TADA!

But corny jokes aside… maybe we start at the beginning this time.

The first sutra begins:

Atha yoga anushasanam.
Now is the time for yoga.

Patanjali is credited with compiling what we now call the Yoga Sutras. And the very first word preserved is athanow.

Scholars have reflected for centuries on why the text begins this way. What I was taught is that now signals readiness.

In this lifetime.
In this human form.
In this very moment.

We have arrived at a place where we are capable of practice — capable of awareness — capable of loosening our attachments.

How fortunate we are to be here.
To grow.
To learn.
To expand.

Now.

Lately, I’ve also been rereading Atomic Habits by James Clear. It’s my third time through, and every time I return to it, I notice something new.

There’s something about that.

Life often moves in cycles. Patterns resurface. Habits we thought we’d overcome trickle back in. I know I have tendencies that reappear when I’m tired, stressed, or overwhelmed.

But each time, I try to respond just a little differently.

Just 1% better.

We don’t need dramatic reinventions. We don’t need to leap from zero to one thousand overnight — even though “go big or go home” is the message we’re often given.

Small shifts compound.
Small steps prevent burnout.
Small changes allow us to meet ourselves with grace instead of pressure.

Maybe that’s what the first sutra whispers. Now — in this lifetime — we can continue the work. And this applies not only to our inner world, but to our outer one too.

Every small act of clearing is a continuation.

Every steady breath before a reaction is a continuation.

Every gentle release continues the path.

Now is the time for yoga.
Now is the time for growth.
Now is the time to be 1% more aware than yesterday.

Not because we’re behind.
Not because we’re broken.
But because we are here.

And that is enough to begin.

A Gentle Journal Prompt

Instead of trying to overhaul your life this week, sit with this:

Where in my life am I ready to begin again — gently?

And even smaller:

What would 1% more awareness look like today?

Let that be enough.

Begin with Me

If this reflection resonated with you and you’re craving a steady, grounded way to begin again, I’d love to stay connected.

No pressure.
No dramatic overhaul.
Just thoughtful questions, gentle structure, and room to grow at your own pace. Now is the time.
