Calm Racing Thoughts With This Simple 5-Step Grounding Practice
Sabrina Caldera | SEP 30, 2025
I’ve found that over time, certain lyrics, poems, and songs stay with me. What once felt like teenage angst has quietly grown alongside me. The older I get, the more meaning I find in those seemingly random lines that once spoke to a younger version of myself.
Growth isn’t linear. It happens slowly—so slowly that we often miss the huge shifts and changes we’ve already endured. Little by little, we mold and shape into who we are today. But that doesn’t mean the things that once held meaning no longer do; sometimes they grow with us. We discover deeper wisdom in them as we see more of the world and experience more of life.
Sometimes, though, our minds feel loud and heavy. Negative, spiraling thoughts can hold us hostage until movement in any direction feels impossible. It’s in these moments that we need something simple and personal to bring us back to solid ground.
🌻 Why it helps: Mindfulness research shows that pausing to ground yourself—especially by reflecting on meaningful memories or personal growth—can calm the nervous system and reduce rumination. Writing about your life story has also been shown to increase resilience and a sense of meaning.
The practice below is one I use when I need to pause and remember the growth I’ve already lived.
Think of a song lyric, poem line, or phrase that has stayed with you for years—something that still feels alive inside you.
Write it down on paper (or in your journal).
Ask yourself: Why has this line stayed with me? What about it resonates?
Reflect: Has its meaning changed or grown over time? Maybe it feels deeper now or means something new.
Notice your growth: How have you changed since that line first mattered to you? What does that say about your strength or journey?
Grounding: A single lyric or phrase gives your mind something steady to hold when everything feels scattered.
Reframing: Exploring why the words still matter shifts attention from anxiety to self-discovery.
Perspective: Seeing how you’ve grown since the line first spoke to you reminds you of your resilience.
Keep the lines you uncover somewhere safe—in a journal, a note on your phone, or pinned above your desk. On the days when your thoughts feel heavy and loud, return to them. Let those familiar words remind you of how far you’ve come and help you breathe a little easier in the present moment.
