Stepping Out of the Cave: Questioning the Life We’re Living

Sabrina Caldera | SEP 13, 2025

We All Have Our Own Caves

Have you ever come home from work, dropped your keys on the counter, and thought: Is this it? The same commute. The same small talk. The same to-do list shuffled around like cards in an endless game. It can feel like Groundhog Day—a life on repeat, with only minor variations.

And while sitting with that realization, maybe you’ve felt a quiet ache: Surely there’s more to life than this.

The Cages We Build

As a culture, we often chase fulfillment through consumerism. We buy gadgets to “save time” or décor to make our homes Instagram-perfect—only to donate them months later. Our modern cave isn’t stone walls and shadows; it’s curated feeds, comparison, and “keeping up with the Joneses” (who now post unrealistic adventures online instead of buying midlife-crisis Corvettes).

These distractions can keep us chained—comfortable, but unfulfilled.

Plato’s Reminder: The Cave Is Not All There Is

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave tells of prisoners who see only shadows on a wall, mistaking them for reality. One prisoner steps out, blinded at first, and slowly discovers a vibrant, sunlit world. When he returns to tell the others, they laugh at him. The path out of the cave is rarely the popular choice, but it’s the only path toward a fuller life.

Aparigraha: Loosening the Grip

Yoga philosophy offers Aparigraha—non-grasping—as a tool for this journey. Letting go doesn’t mean abandoning responsibilities or renouncing joy. It means questioning why we cling to certain habits, possessions, or stories. It’s the courage to release what no longer serves us so we can make space for something truer.

Small, Brave Steps Toward the Light

  • Notice One Pattern – Tonight, pause and ask: Am I doing this because it matters to me, or because it’s what’s expected?

  • Release One Thing – Choose an item, belief, or obligation you can set down today.

  • Seek Stillness – Five minutes of mindful breathing can remind you there’s more to life than the noise.

Each small step brings you closer to the cave’s mouth and the light beyond.
